About Us

The Maine Center for Functional Medicine was started by Michael J. Gilmore, D.O. in 2011. With the growing number of chronic problems in the population, Dr. Gilmore realized that Traditional Medicine is not well equipped for this. Modern Medicine is best for acute care, which is not the majority of the problems seen in a medical office.

Functional Medicine is a new way of practicing that teaches providers to look for underlying causes of illness to try and cure them, instead of just using medication to cover up the symptoms. In addition, there are many natural ways to treat problems. Training in Functional Medicine has opened new doors to wellness and provided many benefits to his patients. The goal was to include more Advanced Functional Medicine investigation into a normal medical practice. Usually, Functional Medicine providers drop out of insurance and only accept cash for the services they provide. He wanted to integrate Traditional Medicine and Alternative and Functional Medicine into one center. That way, he could still do regular medicine but could use Advanced Testing and Treatment techniques to help his patients.

Dr. Gilmore graduated from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1996 and completed his Family Medicine Internship and Residency in Michigan. As a National Health Corps Scholar, he served 4 years in Houghton Lake, Michigan in an undeserved Community Health Center. In 2003, he came back to the Bangor, Brewer area, where his is from.

In 2005, he finally tired of using only Traditional Medicine and learned about Functional Medicine, which is better suited to the complex array of chronic problems patients now have. Traditional Medicine is concerned with quickly getting to a diagnosis and using medicine or surgery, instead of correcting the cause and having a chance to not have the diagnosis at all. A light went on and he began to branch his training out into higher levels. This is when he discovered Functional Medicine.

Since then, he continues to fulfill all the requirements for certification in Family Medicine, while also training in Traditional Medicine, Functional Medicine, Nutrition, Anti-Aging, Bioidentical Hormones, Nutritional Response Testing (Muscle Testing for Nutritional Issues) and other fields.

Personally, Dr. Gilmore is from the Bangor/Brewer area of Maine, graduating from Brewer High School in 1982 and enlisting directly into the U.S. Navy. After 6 years as a Cryptographic Electronics Technician, he went back to civilian life and accepted a job working at Chrysler Corporation in Detroit, Michigan. While in Michigan, he married his Navy sweetheart, Virginia.

After a few years, he decided to go to college, quitting his job. Starting out at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Michigan, he excelled in his studies and was accepted into Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has an Associates Degree in Math and Natural Sciences, a Bachelor’s Degree in Science and a Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine.
